Pulpotomy

When does a child need root canal therapy (pulpotomy)?

As a child begins to experience pain in one (or more) of their teeth, a sensitivity to varying temperatures, or has the pulp of the tooth is exposed as a result of a chip or a crack in the tooth, it may be time to consider root canal therapy. Our specialists at Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist are able to remove the exposed pulp of the tooth using root canal therapy, and place a crown on the affected spot. The crown, which is simply a cap placed over the tooth, keeps the tooth protected until the permanent tooth grows in. At Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist we ensure the best treatment for every one of our patients with our advanced state-of-the-art technology and value the oral health of our patients. Schedule an appointment at our office to find out if root canal therapy is right for your child.

How is root canal therapy on baby teeth different than on adult teeth?

Unlike with adults, at Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist, our specialists usually do not need to use any special instruments in order to remove the pulp of the tooth from the roots of the tooth. The procedure is kept almost completely painless and is finished much quicker than in adults, since the only the surface nerve structure needs to be removed. Once the procedure is finished, a crown is placed on the tooth for the most effective form of protection for the tooth until the permanent tooth grows in its place.

What will happen when the permanent tooth wants to come in if the baby tooth has root canal therapy and a crown?

At Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist, our pediatric dentists use a biocompatible material for the tooth root canal therapy, meaning there will be absolutely no negative effects on the permanent tooth growing in. Instead, the crown and baby toot underneath will fall out just as any other tooth as the permanent tooth grows in. The procedure will cause no pain or discomfort to the child and will leave absolutely no negative effects thanks to the hard work of the specialists at Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist.

Will my child have pain after baby tooth root canal therapy is performed?

During the treatment, the child is given local anesthesia in order to have the tooth numbed and minimize any pain the child might feel. However, it is common for the child to experience some mild sensitivity to the crown, just as they would with any other dental procedure. Other than mild sensitivity after the procedure, the procedure itself is relatively painless for the child. If any pain does occur after the treatment that may seem unusual please call our team at Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist immediately.
