It is often a concern for many parents when their child needs to get their tooth decay drilled away, but this no longer has to be a concern! At Advanced Dental Bronx – Children's Dentist our specialists can now treat cavities and tooth decay using a special compound named silver diamine fluoride. Using only a couple drops will safely prevent any cavities or tooth decay from spreading any further. Silver diamine fluoride is a colourless liquid which is able to effectively kill the bacteria that causes cavities and tooth decay; however, this is not a substitute for removing or filling cavities.

Is It Safe?

Silver diamine fluoride has been proven incredibly effective and safe as it is being used more often around the world. With almost no side effects and a painless procedure, treating cavities and tooth decay with silver diamine fluoride has never been easier. However, some parents tend to dislike the minor, temporary staining that the silver diamine fluoride leaves on the affected teeth. Although this is only a temporary issue and is much preferable over having a child fear having their cavities removed using a drill.

Who Can Benefit?

Silver diamine fluoride is largely used for those children at risk for cavities, although it is not used as an alternative for fillings or removing cavities. The procedure is safe and is considered a form of cavity control for children, a perfect solution for those patients with too many cavities to treat at one dental visit. Silver diamine fluoride is also ideal to treat children with behavioural challenges which make other treatments difficult, patients with special needs, and children too young who cannot tolerate dental treatment yet.
