Valtrex is a potent medication for the treatment of different viral infections. It belongs to a drug class known as Purine Nucleosides. Valtrex is also known as valacyclovir. It comes as blue oblong tablets with “Valtrex” and the corresponding dose in milligrams or grams boldly inscribed on it. Hence, we have Valtrex 500 mg and Valtrex 1 gram. It’s also available as a liquid solution.

Uses of Valtrex

Valtrex is utilized in treating the following:

  • Cold sores (fever blisters)  in adults and children aged 12 years and older
  • Chickenpox in pediatrics who are 2 years or older
  • Genital herpes
  • Shingles

How Valtrex Works

Viruses cause harm and injury to their host by multiplying their numbers. This process is aided by an enzyme known as DNA polymerase. Valtrex inhibits the replication of viruses by blocking the replication enzymes, thereby allowing the body to heal faster through its own defense mechanisms.

Kidney impairment

The use of Valtrex in people who have a preexisting kidney impairment should be done with caution and under the supervision of a specialist. This monitoring or surveillance may include the need for Lab tests like creatinine clearance and renal function tests to ensure that metabolites of the drug are not causing further harm to the kidneys.
