how to prepare for oral surgery
If you have an oral surgery scheduled at Advanced Bronx Dental, you might be wondering how to get ready for the procedure. Luckily, our team has put together a helpful list of tips and recommendations to guide you in preparing for your surgery.

Consult With Advanced Bronx Dental Oral Surgeon
If you have an upcoming oral surgery, reaching out to your oral surgeon can help you prepare more effectively. Oral Surgeon may need to know about any medications you're currently taking or if you'll require any medication before or after the procedure. If your oral surgeon at Advanced Bronx Dental prescribes medication for you, it's a good idea to plan ahead to ensure you can get your prescriptions on time. If the medication is needed after the surgery, you might want to have someone else pick it up for you, as you may not feel up to doing so yourself afterward.
When you are consulting your oral surgeon at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale, you can express any concerns or fears that you have before you undergo your procedure. Our professional team at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale will be more than happy to explain your procedure to you and answer any questions you may have prior to your appointment.
In some cases, your insurance won't cover a procedure unless you can prove it's medically necessary, so a referral from your doctor or dentist is necessary. A referral from a medical or dental professional helps ensure continuity of care before, during and after the surgery.
Make Arrangements For Transportation And Care
Depending on your procedure, you may need to choose a responsible adult or guardian to accompany you to and from your appointment. Because many procedures may involve you undergoing anesthesia, you may not be capable of taking yourself home after your procedure. In this case it is advised that you choose a responsible guardian to escort you to and from your appointment for your safety.
Eating, Drinking And Smoking Before Oral Surgery
Our team at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale advises that you follow certain struct instructions about your eating and drinking habits. As a general rule, we advise that you do not eat or drink anything (including water) for 8 hours prior to your appointment.
However, if you are undergoing an oral surgery that may involve you using a local anesthetic, you may have a light meal a few hours prior to your appointment. Before your appointment, be sure to brush and floss your teeth, and be sure not to smoke for at least 12 hours prior to your appointment. After your oral surgery, smoking is not permitted for a minimum of 24 hours.
What You Should Wear For Your Oral Surgery And Items To Avoid
On the day of your appointment, we advise that you wear any clothing that is short-sleeved, loose-fitting, and comfortable. Ideally, be sure to wear any clothing you would not mind being stained, as occasionally your clothing may become stained from the appliances used during the procedure. Although our dental professionals do their best to avoid staining any of your garments, it is recommended you do not wear any clothing you do not want stained. On the day of your procedure, do not wear any jewelry as you will be asked to remove it before the procedure begins.
Depending on the type of sedation method used, it is best to avoid wearing contact lenses on the day of your appointment. Avoid wearing any excessive makeup to your appointment, although it is recommended that you bring a lip balm or moisturizer to your appointment as your lips might have a chance of becoming chapped during the procedure.
Plan Your Post Surgical Diet
After your oral surgery is completed, at Advanced Dental – Scarsdale we recommend that you develop a strict diet for the following days. Foods that require little to no chewing are ideal for this diet, and foods that are spicy or acidic are not recommended as they may irritate the gum tissue. Easy to prepare beverages, such as Boost, Slim Fast, Ensure, or other protein powder shake mixes, are ideal for you to have after your oral surgery.
Such drinks will provide you with higher levels of vitamins and minerals that are necessary for you to have following your oral surgery. It is advised that you avoid using a straw to drink any beverages, as the straw may irritate your gums and cause dry socket, a painful condition which will require you to schedule another appointment to fix.

preparing your recovery space
Before you come to Advanced Dental – Scarsdale for your appointment, prepare your bed and living space to allow you to have a comfortable area to rest at after the surgery. Ideally, you should have enough pillows to keep yourself reclined as it may be painful for you to sleep on your side or on your back. At Advanced Dental – Scarsdale, we recommend using an old pillow case or sheets that you would not mind staining. If it is possible, set up your relaxation area in the room where you will be spending the most time, such as your living room or bedroom.
