Tooth extraction

A tooth extraction is a procedure to remove a tooth from the gums, possibly the jawbone, that has decayed when food and bacteria interact to form plaque and tartar. The most common reason for an extraction is to remove decayed teeth, fractured or broken teeth. The procedure may also be used when a tooth cannot erupt fully, to reduce dental crowding, or the risk of infection.

In many cases, implants can be placed at the same time of an extraction –further minimizing the number of surgical procedures. This is known as an immediate implant

Removal

In most cases, the removal of wisdom teeth is performed underlocal anesthesia, IV sedation or general anesthesia. These options, as well as the possible surgical risks, will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed. Once the teeth are removed, the gum is sutured. To help control bleeding, gauze is placed in your mouth. You will rest under our supervision in the office until you are ready to be taken home. Upon discharge, your postoperative kit will include postoperative instructions, a prescription for pain medication, antibiotics, and a follow-up appointment in one week.
